4 essential tips to choose the right eating disorder center near you

According to the National Eating Disorder Association, about 70 million people in the country suffer from one or the other form of eating disorders. Usually, eating disorders are trivialized and people address it as “eating too much” or “eating too less.” There are several reasons why people develop eating disorders, but what calls for immediate attention is that this condition can be life-threatening. This is why it is essential to enroll people with eating disorders to the right eating disorder treatment centers. Such centers have several programs and help patients get better by addressing the dangerous behavior patterns, tackling the accompanying psychological problems, teaching and improving nutrition.

If you are looking for the best eating disorder treatment center near you to help a loved one, here are certain effective tips that can help you make the right choice.

    • Firstly, you need to decide which type of facility you wish to enroll the patient in: outpatient treatment centers or in-patient centers. The former treatment centers take place in hospitals or treatment centers, but they allow the patient to recover at home. Moreover, patients have to keep their appointments with the doctor, psychologists, and nutritionist; the latter requires the patients to stay in the in-patient care where they can be monitored by trained professionals. The time period can range from a few days to a few months. Such treatment centers are recommended for people with severe eating disorders.
    • Once you have decided the type of eating disorder treatment center, you can start researching whether the eating disorder treatment centers near you have the required accreditation. Such centers need an accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities or the Joint Commission.
    • The staff at the eating disorder treatment center will be the ones taking care of the patient, which is why you need to research the medical staff. Ask for a record of the experience and qualifications of the staff, and this includes the clinical staff, medical staff, psychiatrist, nutritionist, psychologist, dietician, and recreation therapist. An eating disorder treatment center is only as good as its staff.
    • When determining the right eating disorder treatment center, you need to check whether the center offers aftercare programs. Such aftercare programs are an essential part of the treatment and recovery process and aim at providing support and help to the patients after their stay at the residential care ends.

Adhering to these tips can help you find the best right eating disorder treatment centers near you. However, if you wish to seek the best treatment for your loved one, enrolling them to one of the top eating disorder treatment centers will yield the best results. Some of the best eating disorder treatment centers are Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, Aloria Health, Canopy Cove, Carolina House, Center of Hope of the Sierras, and Magnolia Creek.

    What is Spinal Muscle Atrophy

Spinal muscular atrophy or SMA is a genetic disease that affects the nervous system. The disease affects that part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement. The muscles don’t receive signals from these nerve cells that are located near the spinal cord and as a result the muscles begin to waste away. The inactivity of the muscles causes them to become smaller and smaller and hence the word “atrophy”.

The age of the person decides the degree to which the motor functions are affected. The sooner the onset, the higher the effect on motor functions. Infants who display symptoms will typically have very low levels of functioning. This is Type 1. SMA in toddlers(intermediate), children(juvenile) or adults – type 2, 3, 4 respectively – will see higher levels of motor function.

SMA is generally caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene – a deficiency of a motor neuron protein called survival of motor neuron (SMN). This protein is necessary for normal motor neuron function and its deficiency is the result of genetic flaws or mutations on chromosome 5. There are other forms of SMA (non-chromosome 5) that are rare and caused by mutations in genes other than SMN.

The main symptom of SMA is the weakness of proximal muscles – the ones closer to the center of the body. These are affected much more than the distal muscles. Proximal muscles include the shoulders, hips, thighs and upper back and the weakening of these can mean curving of the spine and even difficulty in swallowing and breathing.

Since SMA is a purely muscular disease, the person suffering from it has completely normal functioning of sensory, mental and emotional states.

Spinal muscular atrophy is inherited when both copies of the SMN1 gene in an individual have mutations. Generally, the parents of one who suffers from SMA each carry one copy of the mutated gene but they do not show signs or symptoms of the disease itself. Occasionally, a person who suffers from SMA will have inherited an SMN1 gene mutation from one parent and then acquires a new mutation in the other copy of the gene. This might occur during the formation of eggs or sperm or very early in embryonic development.

Here’s how Intrarosa helps in treating dyspareunia

Dsypareunia is a condition that affects several women across at some point in their lives. In layman’s language, dyspareunia is painful sexual intercourse. Women often dismiss this condition as they believe sexual intercourse is always painful, and perform the act despite the excruciating pain they experience. Dyspareunia occurs for several reasons that range from structural problems to psychological ones. This condition is characterized by persistent or recurrent pain in the genital area, and it can occur before, during, or after a sexual intercourse.

The symptoms of dyspareunia are as follows:

    • Pain experienced during penetration
    • Burning pain or aching pain
    • Throbbing pain that lasts hours after intercourse
    • Pain experienced with each penetration
    • Pain experienced while putting in a tampon

Women often trivialize this condition as they believe that it is normal to experience pain during intercourse. However, if the pain becomes unbearable there’s an FDA-approved medication that can help in relieving the pain experienced during an intercourse. The Intrarosa®  is an FDA-approved medicine that can treat moderate to severe pain experienced because of dyspareunia. Dyspareunia is often caused by the thinning and drying of the vaginal tissue.

Intrarosa®  is a synthetic version of a steroid called prasterone or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) that is naturally produced by the adrenal glands. This steroid is considered to be the “precursor hormone” that remains inactive until it comes in contact with vaginal or other cells, and eventually stimulates the production of estrogen and testosterone. When this steroid interacts with the vaginal cells to produce estrogen, it improves the elasticity and pH levels in the vaginal tissues, making sexual intercourse less painful.

Intrarosa® is available in the form a suppository that is inserted into the vagina once daily at bedtime, and it dissolves overnight. The 12-week placebo-controlled clinical trials involving 406 women between the age of 40 and 80, who experienced dyspareunia, yielded desirable results as these women reported a reduced severity in the pain experienced during an intercourse.

Intrarosa® is considered to be a great breakthrough for treating patients with dyspareunia as the other alternative treatments involved performing desensitization therapy or opting for counseling or sex therapy, which didn’t always work for them. However, it is essential to consult with a licensed medical practitioner before using Intrarosa®.

3 popular treatments to consider for curing anemia

Anemia is a medical condition in which you do not have enough healthy red blood cells in your body. To treat your anemia, you first need to understand its underlying cause and what type of anemia you are suffering from. Some of the common types of anemia that you must know are the one caused by iron deficiency, vitamin deficiency, continuous bleeding, pregnancy, and a bone marrow related disorder.
Read along to know about three popular treatment options that you can consider if you are anemic.

    • Iron deficiency anemia treatment
Anemia caused because of deficiency of iron in the body is probably one of the most common types of anemia. Your bone marrow needs iron to produce hemoglobin for your red blood cells. The treatment for this type of anemia typically involves your doctor prescribing you oral supplements of ferrous sulfate, which you will be advised to take every day. If you are looking for natural ways to cure this type of anemia, then you can do so by including iron rich food like dark leafy vegetables, beans, and nuts in your diet.
    • Vitamin deficiency anemia treatment
It is believed that another major reason why people are anemic is that their body lacks the necessary vitamins, specifically vitamin B12. To treat this type of anemia, doctors inject a man-made form of vitamin B12 called hydroxocobalamin into your body, every alternate day for two weeks. You can also increase the level of vitamin B12 in your body naturally by including meat, milk, eggs, salmon, fortified cereals and soy products in your diet.
    • Pregnancy caused anemia treatment
During pregnancy, your requirement for iron increases and if your dietary intake of iron does not meet this requirement, then you might end up suffering from anemia. During pregnancy, if your hemoglobin level is less than 9 grams per dL, then you are diagnosed with anemia. To treat this type of anemia, doctors prescribe an oral dose of 60 to 120 mg of iron per day. The best way to reduce your risk of developing anemia during pregnancy is by making sure to take a multivitamin with folic acid every day.
Just keep in mind that anemia is not something you should take lightly and if left untreated, it might cause severe health complications in future. So, consult a doctor immediately if you suspect that you might suffer from anemia.

Know about the three common birth control options

There have been different birth control options that people have been using for years and as science advances, the options have become more safe, effective, and reliable. Depending on which birth control option is best for you and your partner, you can decide from the variety of options that are available out there. The three birth control options that are commonly used by most people are-

    • Birth control pills
Birth control pills are one of the most available birth control options and are very commonly used by people. Birth control pills are medicines that have hormones that help prevent pregnancy. There are a variety of brands that offer birth control pills, but it is always suggested to consult your doctor before consuming one. The pills stop your ovulation and hence, there is no egg around the sperm to fertilize. This is how birth control pills prevent pregnancy. Although pills are a great birth control option, they don’t prevent you from sexually transmitted infections.
    • Condoms
Condoms are one of the most accessible birth control options available. Condoms are not only easy to use, but they are easily available as well. Condoms not only prevent birth control, but they also provide protection against STDs. Condoms cover the penis during sex and hence, they stop the semen from getting into the vagina. This ensures that the sperms don’t meet an egg and, in turn, prevent birth control. Also, condoms prevent STDs by covering the penis, preventing the contact with vaginal fluids, and limiting the skin-to-skin contact that can spread sexually transmitted diseases.
    • Birth control implant
A birth control plant is also known as AKA Nexplanon. It is a tiny thin rod that is about the size of a matchstick. The implant prevents you from getting pregnant by releasing hormones into your body. It is one of the common birth control options suggested by the doctor that protects you from pregnancy for up to 4 years. It is not a permanent birth control option and whenever, you decide that you want to be pregnant or don’t want to have your implant anymore, your doctor can take it out for you. Once the birth control implant is removed, you can conceive whenever you want.

4 reasons why you may need iron supplements

Iron is one of the most important minerals as it is essential for the good health of the body. The mineral does the vital function of creating energy from the nutrients while also transmitting nerve impulses. Iron is supplied to all parts of the body with the help of red blood cells; it is also present in every cell.

One receives iron through the food they eat; however, in some conditions, people may also suffer from a deficiency. A deficiency of iron can lead to the inability of the red blood cells to provide oxygen to the cells and tissues. In such a case, one may have to add iron supplements to the diet. Here are a few reasons that can lead to your doctor recommending iron supplements.

Regular blood loss – Individuals who experience blood loss regularly can suffer from iron deficiency. Moreover, even regular blood donors and people with gastrointestinal bleeding are at a high risk. Thus, one may have to add iron supplements to their diet in order to make up for the deficiency caused by blood loss.

Kidney dialysis  The kidney is a pivotal organ as it promotes the growth of red blood cells. However, when an individual does not have healthy kidneys and undergoes dialysis, there is a great loss of blood. The treatment also limits the intake of iron through the diet. Thus, iron supplements aid in maintaining the levels of the mineral in the body.

Pregnancy  Pregnant women have a significantly higher requirement of daily iron intake. While women need a take in around 15 to 18 milligrams of iron daily, pregnant women require around 27 milligrams of iron every day. Doctors are likely to recommend iron supplements if they conclude that the woman does not have enough iron during their prenatal period.

Menstruation – The menstrual cycle can lead to a depletion of iron stores in the body. This is a major reason why women are at a higher risk of suffering from anemia. Iron supplements are regularly administered to women suffering from iron deficiency.

Most individuals have been recorded to respond well to iron supplements. It is important to consume iron supplements before meals as food can affect the body’s ability to absorb iron. Moreover, iron supplements must be taken in proportion as excess amounts can be toxic.

All you need to know about cellulitis infection

Cellulitis is an infection caused by bacteria. It affects the layers of the skin and the soft and fat tissues beneath the skin. People who are obese or have athletes foot or psoriasis are more likely to be infected with leg cellulitis. It is important to undertake leg cellulitis treatment immediately. Untreated cuts even small wounds where the skin is cut or open and dry or dirty is an ideal site for the bacteria. Prevention and management of bruises and cuts go a long way from contracting the infection. The following instances are also at high risk of contracting this infection:

    • People who have poor circulation because of reduced mobility either due to age, physical disability, or obesity.
    • People who have low immune system associated with other illness
    • Long-term diabetes certainly triggers health complications and cellulitis could be one of the many.
    • Those who are recovering from chemotherapy can also suffer from cellulitis.

The infected area generally turns red, swollen, warm, tender and painful. If caught early, cellulitis treatment is certainly a possibility. In case of mild infection, the treatment is an oral intake of antibiotics for 3-10 days depending on the size, location and medical condition of the patient. The patient is likely to show signs of improvement within 24 to 48 hours. Patients are advised to complete the course of the medication even if the infection subsides to prevent recurrent cellulitis. Warm compresses on the site of the wound can reduce the inflammation and relieve pain.

In case the infection does not subside and the patient continues to have a fever or the infected area has a lot of pus, doctors would recommend intravenous administration of antibiotics. The drainage of the abscess is done by surgical methods. To check if the bloodstream is infected, swab test from the wound is taken to identify the bacteria and treatment is done accordingly. Management of the wound will become crucial and further injury to the wound has to be prevented. Most patients are taught to dress and manage the wound. The skin has to be kept moist using creams.

The most commonly used antibiotic for leg cellulitis treatment is Penicillin. If the patient is not responding a combination of antibiotics is prescribed based on the patient’s history (In case the person has an immune deficiency disease or diabetics). Recurrent cellulitis is a cause for concern if holistic treatment is not done. In most cases, complications do not arise and the infection is contained. But if leg cellulitis treatment is not undertaken, the infection can reach the bloodstream and result in the loss of the leg or could even be life-threatening.
